Cold Laser Therapy in Eden Prairie
Wellspring Health Center utilizes advanced, FDA approved, cold laser technology for the non-surgical treatment of musculoskeletal and spinal conditions. The Erchonia Low Level Laser, aka cold laser, is a painless, high-tech, non-thermal healing laser light that is transmitted through the clothing and skin to treat the painful, restricted joints and muscles.
This 635nm wavelength of laser light has an anti-inflammatory and healing effect on painful tissues. The laser is often used in combination with physical therapy treatments to greatly enhance rehabilitation.
The Benefits of Cold Laser Therapy are many and include:
- Reduced pain and inflammation without medication
- Improved blood flow to the area
- Increased tissue healing time as shown by FDA double-blind studies
- Increase in cellular energy to aid in healing
- Increase in repair of damaged tissue
- Reduced dependence on pain medications
- Increased recovery time after injuries and after surgery
There are over 2000 published studies on Low Level Laser Therapy reporting its effectiveness with no negative side effects.

Common Questions about Laser Therapy:
1. How does the Laser Work?
Low Level Lasers are an amazing technology that greatly enhance the therapies done by physicians and physical therapists. Exercises, stretches and therapy procedures work at the level of the soft tissues and joints. Low Level Lasers work at the level of the cells by increasing the energy that cells need to regenerate and heal and increase the ability of cells to communicate with each other! The wavelength of the FDA approved Erchonia laser is 635nm. This wavelength of light has been shown to be the best wavelength for improving cellular metabolism, and therefore, improving the healing ability of the cells. One of the key processes that is enhanced is the production of ATP in the mitochondria of the cell. When ATP is increased so is the cells ability to heal and recover from stress or injury. The light energy from the laser initiates a cascade of reactions from the cell membrane all the way to the cell's DNA. This is called cellular amplification; a phenomenon that earned the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine in 1994. Due to the unique ability of the low level laser to speed recovery time, the Erchonia Laser is used to treat world class athletes.
2. Can the Laser treat through my clothing?
Yes. Low Level Laser Therapy is just as effective when used through clothing and it is a common practice in physical therapy and medical settings. The size of the laser light particles (photons) are tiny and can easily move through clothing as well as bandages and dressings on wounds. In fact, the patients that participated in the FDA double blind study for treatment of neck and shoulder pain were treated with the Erchonia laser through their clothing. The study gave the first FDA approval to Erchonia Low Level Lasers in 2002. Since that time the FDA has passed similar studies by Erchonia for treating Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Wounds and Scar Tissue.
3. What should I feel during Laser Therapy?
Unlike "hot lasers" which are used in medicine to cut tissues and perform surgical procedures, Low Level Lasers are classified as "cold lasers" and are used to enhance healing of tissues. Most patients report that they do not feel the laser light during a treatment but some patients report a slight tingling sensation. Patients commonly feel a decrease in stiffness and tightness in the muscles and joints during and after treatment. Laser Therapy is also used during physical therapy exercises and stretches to activate weak muscles at the cellular level. The patient will see a noticeable difference in manual muscle tests before and after treatment of these weak areas.
4. Are there any side effects to Laser Therapy?
There are no known side effects to Low Level Laser Therapy. There are over 2000 published research studies on Low Level Laser Therapy with no reported side effects. (Even with all of the studies supporting the safety, we do not recommend laser therapy during pregnancy.)
